A commenter in a recent post ask about what I would recommend for bondage starters. I’ve been practicing a bdsm lifestyle in my sex life since I was 19, I am not an expert but I can give you an idea of what I feel is good for starters.
First lets go over some safety rules for bondage:
- Everything must always be consensual. No means no. Talk about what you are going to do before you do it.
- Have a safe word. It should be something you would not say outside of sexual play such as tofu. Many people use red as a safe word.
- You should always be able to slip a finger under a restraint - if not, it’s too tight.
- When graduating to rope bondage take extra caution - it’s much easier to be injured.
- If you start to feel numbness coming on, you should be untied.
When you’re starting out it’s not a good idea to get into chains, ropes or locks … or anything complicated or hard to get out of[especially in case of emergency]. Sure being chained up with a million locks can be really hot but it’s not for beginners! I also don’t think ball gags are good for first timers as communication is Key in the beginning stages of bondage. I’d recommend a soft bondage style kit for starters:

The fantasy kit from Sport Sheets is a really great kit. The Velcro restraints and nylon tethers might not seem like they’re gonna keep you in but they do. Also the velcro restraints are easy to get out in case of emergency. I have personal experiance with sport sheet brand restraints and straps, they are very comfortable which is great for a beggenier who might not want to be tied into uncomfortable positions.
Other kits similar to this one: Explore BDSM kit[comes in variety of colors], & Beginners Bondage Fantasy Kit.
If you don’t want to get a kit, you can try tying each other up with silk scarfs[and also using them as blindfolds].

After that you might want to try bondage tape. Bondage tape can be really fun although I think it’s too easy to get out of. ; ) Do not use regular tape as it can irritate skin.
Once you’ve graduate from soft bondage you might want to try rope:

I’d recommend a starters rope bondage kit that comes with instructions such as Japanese Silk Love Rope kit. I also believe you should purchase a guide that will expand your knowledge a lot more such as the Erotic Bondage Handbook which is full of helpful instructions accompanied by illustrations. Also do not just use any rope you buy at the hardware store, it is best to use rope that is made for bondage - such as Japanese Bondage Rope.
When using rope bondage please make sure you have a pair of rescue rope cutter or EMT scissors handy in case of emergency. This is very important.
